What if your business got a boost and someone else did all the work?

This may sound like a dream for businesses and individuals alike. However, that dream can come true when you start using a courier service.

In a world where time is money, on time couriers can completely transform your business. However, many people don’t know what couriers really do, much less how couriers can make a difference.

Interested in what couriers can do for you? Keep reading to discover our complete guide!

What Is a Courier Service?

We’ve prepared a thorough guide for how a courier service can benefit you and your business. Before we go any further, it’s important to define what, exactly, a courier is.

Strictly speaking, a courier is an individual who transports things from one place to another. A courier service employs multiple couriers to offer an alternative to things like the United States Postal Service.

Why, then, would someone use a private courier instead of the postal service? There are actually many differences between the two that makes courier service the preferred alternative.

How Is It Different From a Postal Service?

At first glance, the United States Postal Service would meet the definition of a courier. What, then, is the difference between these services?

First of all, many couriers pride themselves on making time-sensitive deliveries. While you can pay additional fees for things like Priority Mail from USPS, a courier service typically has speedy delivery as part of its main service. And same-day delivery from a courier is better than USPS delivery within a day or two.

Second, many couriers specialize in deliveries within your city. While the USPS must handle deliveries all around the world, a local courier can handle local matters with additional speed and efficiency.

Finally, many couriers offer international shipping options that are more reliable and affordable than those offered by USPS. This can help provide peace of mind that your package will be safely delivered no matter how far it is traveling.

Now that you know a bit more about what separates a courier service from the postal service, let’s dive into the unique benefits that couriers offer you and your business.

1. Gotta Go Fast

We touched on this earlier, but let’s be really clear: you can’t really match a local courier for speedy deliveries.

Think about all of the steps involved if you simply try to mail something to someone in your own city. They most likely won’t receive that item until the next day, and certain factors may delay that even further.

Local couriers specialize in things like same-day delivery, and they can quickly navigate clogged roads with creative transportation. This means that it’s easier than ever to send time-sensitive documents to colleagues who may be delivering presentations, meeting clients, or handling something else very important.

2. Insured Delivery

No matter how reliable various services are, a small business must constantly ask those “what if” questions. For example, “what if my courier item is lost or damaged during transit?”

This is unlikely to happen because of the enhanced reliability (more on this below). But in the event that the worst happens, you can rely on insured delivery.

Professional courier services are fully insured, and you can get insurance on items regardless of how light they are. This gives you a chance to ship even very fragile items with the peace of mind that you deserve.

3. Reliable Service

Professional courier services are very reliable. Of course, your inner cynic may think that “reliable” is just a buzzword everyone uses. So, what makes a courier more reliable than their competition?

The primary factor is that your item doesn’t change hands very much. When you mail something with the post office, it may encounter countless postal workers and warehouse workers. This causes wear and tear which may damage very sensitive products.

With a courier, you hand an item to one person and that person delivers your item. This creates the kind of reliability that you cannot find anywhere else when you need to ship your items.

4. Accessibility

Have you ever really checked out the various USPS shipping options? It’s easy to get dizzy because there are so many different methods of shipping, prices, and types of packing you must try to figure out.

Courier services, however, are much more user-friendly. In most cases, you can make all of the arrangements for pickup and delivery without leaving your computer.

This ease and accessibility saves you time whenever you make shipping arrangements. But it also saves time that you would have otherwise spent driving to the Post Office, waiting in line, and driving back.

Given a choice, who wouldn’t want the option that is easier to use and saves a ton of time?

5. Affordability

For a small business, budget is everything. Even little costs add up, especially if you incur those costs each week.

As a rule, courier services are competitively-priced and more affordable than alternative services. This is largely because they don’t have to manage fleets of vehicles and an army of employees like USPS does.

Saving money by using a courier service is great for your business in the short-term. But it’s even better in the longterm because it frees up funds that would be better spent on things like marketing and product development.

Compare and Decide

We have spent a lot of time and space comparing courier services and the United States Postal Service. The truth is that only you can determine which service is best for your business.

However, we think the answer is clear. Compare the price, services, and overall quality of each business and you’ll find that couriers will completely change how you approach your various shipping needs.

A chance to save time and money doesn’t come along every day for a small business. We recommend you take advantage of the opportunity right away!

In April of 2019, domestic airlines reported mishandling 212,902 pieces of luggage. That is almost 7,100 mistakes per day causing someone to lose access to their personal belongings when they need them most.

It is incompetence like this that has people asking if they should ship bags instead of checking them. Let’s see if we can find the answers to some of the more pressing questions about shipping suitcases.

Is Shipping Luggage Cheaper than Checking Them?

Most airlines allow you to carry one bag onto the plane for free though some, like Spirit Airlines, still charge even for that. To be fair, if you only have one bag, shipping your suitcase is completely unnecessary.

If you are like most of us though, one bag will not cut it. This brings us to one of our tougher questions: Is it cheaper to ship bags or check them?

In short, the answer in most cases is no, but when you get down to it, the answer is a bit more complicated than that. The variables that determine check-in and shipping fees cause a lot of fluctuation in prices for both methods.

What are the Costs Associated with Checking Bags?

How much do your bags weigh? How many bags do you have? What are the dimensions of your bags? These are all factors that determine the amount you pay for checked luggage.

Depending on what you take on board and the airline chosen, the price for checking luggage could be $18 for one bag or up to as much as $150 for three. Don’t forget, these fees are only one way. If it is a round trip, expect to get charged both ways. Then again, that is also the case when you ship your bags.

Please also note, these figures are for normal-sized bags on domestic flights. Prices increase further for over-sized and over-weight bags or for international travel.

What are the Costs Associated with Shipping Suitcases?

How far is the origin airport from the pickup destination? What is the distance from the destination airport to your drop off location? Do you want it the same day or the next day?

These variables, as well as the ones associated with checking in baggage, all help to determine luggage shipping cost. To know how much to ship a suitcase, you must have the answers to all these questions or it is next to impossible to determine the cost.

For something small that isn’t going far, you might pay as little as $50. For something larger that is going a good way, you could be looking at closer to $200 or $300.

The best way to get a price estimate is to figure out your specific luggage parameters and get a quote

Pricing Conclusion

In most cases, it is cheaper to check luggage with the airline. Unless your bags are oversize or overweight, you have more than two bags, or you are flying out of the country, it will likely be cheaper to check luggage. Otherwise, shop around.

For example, golf clubs, skis, and wheelchairs are often cheaper to ship than they are to check. Like everything though, it pays to shop around and weigh your options.

If it’s Cheaper to Check Luggage, Why Ship?

Okay, so now we know that it is likely going to be cheaper to bite the bullet and check your luggage on the plane. If that’s the case, why even consider shipping your bags in the first place? The whole point is to save money, right?

There are still a few other reasons shipping your baggage might be a better option than checking it in.

The Convenience Factor

One of the biggest reasons to ship your luggage is the sheer convenience of it all. With a bit of prep work, you can have your bags picked up from the comfort of your home. Then, when you arrive at your destination, they will be ready and waiting for you.

No more waiting at the luggage carousel playing Where’s my Bag? No risk of being late because you had to check-in your luggage. No dragging heavy bags through a busy airport.

Sure you have to send luggage ahead of you and pack up a little earlier than usual, but is that really so bad when you consider the alternative?

Mishandled or Lost Baggage

It is important to note that airlines are winning the war against mishandled and lost luggage. Reports show they have made an almost 70% improvement in this area since 2008. Not bad, all things considered.

Additionally, airlines must compensate you up to $3,500 for lost, delayed or damaged luggage. For assistive devices, airlines are liable for the full value of the item. So assuming you can prove the damages are warranted you they will take care of you.

That said, there are still many reports of mishandled and lost luggage. In April 2019 alone, 5.44 out of every 1000 bags enplaned were reported as mishandled or lost.

That is not to say a luggage shipping company do not lose or mishandle packages, but it is far less likely to happen. These companies are smaller than airlines and are usually better able to give your luggage the personal care it deserves. Additionally, if your belongings get lost, the shipping company can usually find your luggage quicker than an airline.

The Round-Up on Shipping Suitcases

Whether you are shipping suitcases or checking them, the important thing is to enjoy your trip with as little hassle as possible. With luck, this article helps you do just that. kitting-service.png

Kitting. It’s a funny word but it’s exactly what it sounds like. It’s when you put things together into a kit. In the case of fulfillment centers, putting different products into a kit is a bit more complicated. It means to pull the right products off shelves, find the right packaging for it, update the inventory system, and ship them off to the right places.

But why would you need a service to do that? Why can’t companies do it by themselves? There are plenty of reasons why and today we are going to explore each one.

What Are Kitting Services?

As we’ve already mentioned, kitting is the process of putting products or parts of products together into a kit.

For businesses, this is a very useful service to have because if they are selling hundreds or thousands of products each day and each order is different, a service who does just that would solve all their headaches about packaging and shipping.

Who Offers It?

Kitting services are usually offered by third-party logistics companies called 3PLs. They have contracts with their clients to help them specifically with packaging, inventory management, and shipping.

3PLs are paid for their manual labor, services, and knowledge on how to pull products quickly, bundle them efficiently, and shipping them off in cost-effective ways.

Often, 3PLs also have negotiations with packaging providers and shipping companies to save their clients money on all these external costs.

Who Uses Kitting Services?

Customized packaging services are widely popular with e-commerce stores. Here are some examples.

Bundle Saving Sites

Have you ever shopped for something online then you noticed at the bottom of the screen, the company has a special discount for the product you’re looking at plus something else?

That’s one example of how a company might want to use a kitting service. Companies that all of a sudden want to bundle products together to entice their buyers will find these services useful.

Box Subscription Services

Another example of a business that might use customized packaging services is a box subscription company. These are companies that you sign up with for a specific type of product and they sent you a box of goods each month. This can be food, makeup, clothes, book, dog toys, and even wine.

Customization Stores

The third type of company that benefits from using kitting services is companies that allow their customers to customize products.

For example, some e-commerce stores allow people to build their own computers, bikes, shoes, and so much more. Whatever it is, they also need someone to help them put all these different packages together.

Companies that Want to Streamline Operations

Packing 3PLs do not just ship items to customers. Some 3PLs also bundle parts of products for the next team in line. Once they receive them, they are responsible for putting them together. This is usually the case for products that require more knowledge or more advanced technology to put them together.

Top Benefits of Using Packaging Services

Putting items together into a box sounds simple. But when you have thousands of inventory, hundreds of customized orders, and other aspects of businesses to handle, it becomes a much harder thing to do.

Kitting services not only help business save time and money but also stress from having to figure out where to store their products, how to package them, how to keep track of inventory, and how to ship them off.

Here are some other benefits:

1. More Accuracy

By using a packaging 3PL, you’re also less likely to make packaging and shipping mistakes. Instead of having to oversee manufacturing, operations, customer service, packaging, and inventory management, they can just hand off the last two to a third party company.

Kitting service 3PLs are experts at putting products together and managing inventory. They are less likely to make mistakes than a company who has to oversee a million other tasks.

2. Save Space

If your company has a huge inventory of products, a 3PL can help take some products off your hands. Since they are responsible for packaging your products, they’re going to need a large amount of them on their shelves anyway to fulfill customer orders quickly.

What this means, in the end, is fewer products in your space and less money spent on storage for you.

3. Customized Packaging Solutions

When you bundle various products together, you end up with packages in all kinds of funny shapes and sizes. Where are you going to find packaging materials and boxes that fit them just right? At a packaging services center.

Packaging 3PLs are experienced in packaging all types of products. They have boxes in every shape and size to fit your needs. And if they don’t, they can probably get them much quicker than you can.

4. Save Delivery Costs

Packaging 3PLs are constantly shipping products out. It’s their job! To make their jobs easier, they know what are the best ways to ship products.

And if they’re wise, they’ll definitely have contracts with shipping vendors who offer them discounts, something they are able to pass down onto you.

5. Increase Productivity

If you have an operations team waiting down the line for product parts, a kiting service can save them time and stress by prepping all their materials.

Once they receive them, everything they need will already be there and they can get straight to work. This will save them a lot of time and brain power to look for the parts they need and increase productivity.

Bottom Line

Kitting services are services that 3PLs offer to help customers bundle products and ship them off. They are responsible for storing products, pulling them off shelves, packaging them, updating inventory, and sending them off.

If your business is growing and you’re struggling to get all your products out on time, consider outsourcing your packaging needs to someone else who is good at doing just that. You will be saving yourself time and money in the long run.

warehouse
warehouse

Warehousing has been around for years, and it has helped businesses with different storage needs. Today, a warehouse is not simply a storage facility. Some companies offer additional services to optimize your entire supply chain system. This helps to create time utility as goods are only released when they are needed.

So, if you want to monitor and track your raw materials, finished goods, and other storage needs, then you need to rent a warehouse space.

But what exactly is the importance of using such services? Keep on reading to find out!

Get a Central Storage Location

A centralized location for all your storage needs help to reduce the production gap. This means you can receive, store, distribute, and ship products with much ease to save time and cost.

For example, a warehouse near a loading dock is ideal for receiving and storing goods from suppliers. For another company, a warehouse in the middle of the city can help them distribute and mail items to their customers easily.

Ideally, when choosing a warehouse, you want to look at a location that will make the most sense for your operations. This can be a location that can be easily accessed by your suppliers or one that’s in your target market.

Improved Order Processing

When customers place their orders, all they’re concerned with is the delivery of their products. They want timely delivery and quality services. Any potential fulfillment issue is not their concern; it’s yours.

Warehousing offers you “security stocking.” Ideally, this means that your products are available for shipping whenever customers place their orders. You don’t need to fulfill orders from your production facility.

You can have enough stock for the next few months, and this reduces delays in delivery. The last thing you want is to lose your long-term client or a sale because you couldn’t fulfill an order.

Offers Additional Storage

You can have a storage space your production facility, but your stock volume can outgrow it during your busy months. In this case, getting a warehouse space will make the most sense. You want your goods to be safe from damage and theft.

Basically, a warehouse is great for storing surplus goods, which customers and clients don’t need immediately.

Most companies usually produce goods in anticipation of demand. This means they’ll need adequate storage for their surplus goods until their customers and clients start putting in orders. A warehouse makes an ideal option to meet your needs.

Improved Production Quality

It’s easy to assume that warehousing inventory control systems only monitor quantities.

With better storage management, it’s possible to monitor your production quality, too. You can use it to track your raw materials and finished goods. These numbers can help to determine the number of materials that go through your production process.

As such, when you detect defects or quality problems in the production process, it’s easier to isolate defective materials or finished goods.

An effective warehouse tracking system also allows you to work with your vendors and suppliers to identify and minimize defective raw materials. This helps you save time as you won’t need to carry out control at your facility.

Inventory quality control systems help to monitor the shelf life and expiration dates of your materials. Workers can easily identify and remove stocks before they expire.

Improved Purchasing Decisions

How do you determine the right time to replenish your stock and raw materials?

A warehouse with an effective inventory management system can help in all purchasing decisions. It can offer you accurate data, which you can use to determine when to purchase raw materials and stock.

You can easily identify fast-moving and slow-moving products depending on your order history. It’s also easier to identify seasonal products. The data helps you to avoid purchasing an excessive or inadequate amount of certain materials.

Some inventory systems have signals that alert you to products that need replenishing. This allows you to keep your stock always in check.

Leverage Seasonal Growth

Holiday and shopping seasons, such as Christmas and Black Friday, are famous for their high sales numbers.

As a small business, you don’t need to have Amazon-like facilities to hit your sales targets. A warehouse space will just suffice.

In this case, you have scale your operations when the shopping seasons come. You can monitor consumer trends and stock up on inventories for peak seasons. This won’t lead to a significant increase in costs.

Basically, a warehouse gives you the ability to boost your operations as needed without any cost burden. You can take advantage of new opportunities and sales cycles in the market.

Risk Management

As a business owner, the last thing you want is to experience violent fluctuations in prices. This usually happens when the supply of a particular product exceeds the market demand. If you decide to sell, you can easily suffer loses.

Instead, you can use a warehouse to store your products. When the demand becomes more than the immediate supply and productions, you can then release them to the market.

A warehouse also provides safe custody of perishable goods. You can utilize cold storage and refrigeration to avoid product spoilage. Of course, you can expect this storage service to cost more than regular storage.

Also, businesses can minimize the loss from fire, theft, and damage by using a warehouse to store their goods. Plus, your goods are insured, so you can expect full compensation in case of any damage or loss.

Warehousing – Final Thoughts

As a business owner, you have different options, including private, public, and bonded warehouses. Whatever your option, leveraging warehousing services can help to streamline your supply chain.

local courier service

E-commerce makes your business accessible to the whole world. Yet, the customer base for many small businesses is local. Sure, you might get some orders from halfway across the country. At the end of the day, though, it’s the people living within a few miles who keep the lights on. The challenge becomes one of keeping those customers satisfied without putting a bullet in your profit margin.

If you rely on shipping companies or your employees for local delivery, a local courier service can offer a new way to reach that goal. Just as importantly, using a courier service can also benefit your business internally. Let’s jump in and look at some of the benefits for your small business.

Speed

Delivery times on mail in recent years isn’t stellar. While that’s okay for an ad mailer or newsletter, it’s more of a problem for time-sensitive deliveries. If you expect your letter or package to arrive tomorrow and it turns up in three days, no one is happy.

A local courier service takes the question of delivery time out of the equation. If you say the package must arrive by 5 PM today, it almost always arrives by 5 PM.

Since couriers typically only deliver to one customer at a time, they don’t get held up with dogs or chatty homeowners on their route. They pick up the package and go straight to the destination.

On top of that, courier services often offer same day and after-hours delivery.

Reduces Vehicle Maintenance Costs

Run your own local deliveries? All that vehicle maintenance gets expensive, doesn’t it?

Even with the relaxed standards for oil changes, it doesn’t take long for a vehicle to rack up 5,000 miles when you make deliveries in it all day. Then there are filters, hoses, tires, and brakes. The brake jobs will kill you if your delivery drivers spend a lot of time in stop-and-go traffic.

All of that becomes the problem of your local courier delivery service.

It’s up to them to fold those costs into their baseline pricing. The upshot is that they can spread those costs out over an entire fleet of vehicles. They can buy in bulk and hire a mechanic for the actual work.

In the meantime, your vehicles only get used for crucial work.

Cuts Overall Costs

Unless you happen to run a delivery service, odds are you don’t make deliveries all day. If you make your own deliveries, though, there’s a lot of costs involved.

You need vehicles. Those vehicles require fairly substantial insurance, just in case someone gets into an accident. You also must replace those vehicles periodically for safety and efficiency reasons.

Add the cost of employees to those numbers. It’s not just salaries, but benefits, vacation time, and worker’s compensation for all of the employees making deliveries.

Plus, someone must monitor those delivery drivers. You can always invest in some kind of fleet tracking software, but you’ll still end up paying someone to keep an eye on things.

Let’s You Focus

Following on from the last section, all the resources you dump into delivery are resources taken away from your core business. Since you’re probably not in the business of package delivery, it’s not a core competency. At best, it’s an operational drain.

Think of it like fixing the plumbing. Sure, a motivated do-it-yourselfer can handle a lot of plumbing repairs. The tradeoff is that the repairs generally aren’t as good and take a lot longer.

Your business situation is unique, so there’s always some number crunching to do. Still, many businesses will find that outsourcing deliveries costs less and frees up resources.

Avoid Lost and Damaged Packages

Let’s see if this sounds familiar. Tracking tells you that your package is on the porch. You go check and it looks like someone used it as a stand-in for a soccer ball.

Even more frustrating is when your package goes into a perpetual state of delay. Then, eventually, it just vanishes somewhere between you and the seller.

It’s beyond frustrating.

As a business owner, you hate these situations as much as your customers do. You ship the item in good faith and still catch flack for the shipping company’s screw-up. Then, you end up replacing the item or refunding the purchase just to smooth troubled waters.

The worst part is that you must jump through hoops to get the shipping to make good as often as not. A local courier service all but eliminates this problem.

If the package leaves your store in good condition and arrives damaged, there’s no passing the buck. That makes couriers very conscientious about handling deliveries with care.

Improves Customer Service

Better customer service is one of the key factors in customer satisfaction. While training can help, package delivery times are often a sticking point.

Customers don’t like hearing that a package will arrive in 7-10 days. It may show up in 1-3 days, if they opt for the more expensive option, isn’t much better.

Imagine how happy it will make your customers when you say, “I’ll send it over to your office this afternoon.”

It also lets you distinguish yourself from your competition. Most businesses aren’t offering same-day delivery, even in their local areas.

Depending on what courier service you choose, many of them also offer regional or national services. Those additional services can help you expand your customer base by offering faster than average delivery times.

Parting Thoughts on Local Courier Service

A local courier service isn’t just a way for getting packages from here to there.

If your employees ran deliveries, a courier service can save you money. You reduce costs on vehicle maintenance, salaries, benefits, and workers comp.

Some of those savings will pay for the courier services, but you also free up cash and employees for more valuable activities. You can refocus your efforts on core competencies instead of delivery.

Your packages arrive faster. Plus, you drastically reduce the chances of damaged or missing packages.

It’s a direct path to improved customer service and customer satisfaction.
